Adding metal ions to the terbium-organic framework containing Lewis basic uncoordinated carboxylic oxygen sites leads to significant quenching of luminescence because of the different nature of the metal guest-ligand interactions. The first-principles method, from an electronic point of view, has been used to understand the nature of the inter-molecular interactions between organic ligand and metal ions.
